Condolence: Norma Jean, Hal, and the rest of the family,

My folks Glenn and Linda Hayden and I first remember hearing Harry on KLJC around 1974. We had transitioned from Central Bible Church near the CBC 39th Street Campus to Blue Ridge Bible Church on the SE side of KC. However, we'd heard there was a Christian radio station associated with the college so my dad put a small dipole antenna on our Zenith console stereo in our home located near the Blue Ridge Mall so we could pick up the station which at that time was putting out 300 watts of power (thank you John Sims for that reminder!).

I remember as a middle schooler hearing Nightsounds, Back to the Bible, Haven of Rest, and the announcer during music times say "You're never more than 30 minutes away from the sounds of sacred music." That was Harry's signature line. I was 12 years old then never thinking I'd play a small part in the history of the station.

From what I hear Harry didn't have much budget for the station but was resourceful and worked and found ways to get the equipment to do the job well. He improved the radio ministry that has made a huge impact in Kansas City and beyond and he trained many a life of service as a Christian and in public speaking. We owe him our deep gratitude for his contribution in our lives and for his example of a life lived out of love for the Savior. He was always kind and helpful when I saw him at Calvary events and when he and I got together to fellowship and talk about station history.

Will be praying for the entire Waterhouse family as you adjust to his promotion to heaven with the Lord.

I have known your family since ICS days, just beginning to know you (Dona) while working on the school yearbook my sophomore year. It was great to be hired at Woods Chapel Baptist Church and find your whole family again!

In my first few weeks on staff, I found out I was in charge of the weekly bulletin in addition to other responsibilities. It wasn't long before Harry came to my rescue! He came out of retirement to help put together an awesome bulletin each week, using his years of publishing experience to quickly wordsmith all the great parts that people would rely on for their communication and information. He would brave horrible weather to come in and sit at the computer for hours every week.

Sure, it was a blessing to me. But even more, I began to see that in ministry there is no retirement. Rather, what other new ways can I serve. Harry had a true servant's heart, and I learned a lot about continually making yourself available to Jesus for service!

Know that we are praying for your hearts, while it won't be long before we see Harry again (with Jesus!), it still hurts right now to realize we have to wait to say these words, to sit and talk, to look into those eyes again, and laugh at the quirky sense of humor. I say all this from experience, thinking of the past year my mom has been with Jesus...

Condolence: We first met Harry along with the rest of the Waterhouse in 1999 when we began attending church at what was then called Woods Chapel Baptist Church. Our young family was quickly welcomed there, and by no one more warmly than Harry and Norma, Hal and Dona.

Harry and I quickly bonded in some unexpected ways. Not only did he love God and love music as much as I did, he also loved broadcasting, having launched and operated the radio station at Calvary Bible College for many years. I studied broadcast journalism at Mizzou and had worked as a local anchor and reporter at various stations in Kansas and Missouri.

It was always good to talk to Harry, and I often learned something. He had an easy smile, and an infectious Spirit that just made you comfortable.

Hal, Phil Finter, and Harry had been looking for a baritone for a men's quartet; someone who could fill in the fourth in the four-part harmony of a mix of old time Gospel and a few more modern tunes. The group was eventually called The Woodsmen. We mostly sang at church, but I think I will remember the practices most.

Harry sang bass, but not your typical booming bass. He had a quieter, yet exhuberant way about him. You couldn't look at Harry, while singing or not, without understanding and feeling his genuine love of God and the gospel of Jesus Christ. He lived it in every moment.

That is the most important thing I learned from my friendship with Harry. How to live life with an easy smile, and with faith and hope that shows.

We will miss Harry, but I have no doubt at all that he is "Singing With The Saints" in heaven now, in the presence of his Savior and Lord. And since this world is also not my home, I too look forward to singing with Harry again someday.

Condolence: I'm so grateful for the part that Harry Waterhouse had in my young life back in the mid 1960s. I remember him leading the Christian Service Brigade group at Emmanuel Gospel Church in Connnecticut and how he gently led a crowd of junior high boys with his love for the Lord and gentle laugh. God bless you Harry! Enjoy eternity with the Lord!

Condolence: I first met Harry in 1971 when his oldest son Hal took me to their home as his little brother from Calvary Bible College. I was kinda like the little puppy with the "Can I keep him" look from Hal. Harry and family took me in and became a second family to me. Harry always quietly inspired me to be better than I thought of myself. He always seemed to see a quality in others that they may not recognize in themselves. I was very blessed to know him and N.J. and their entire family. I have thought of him often through the years and I know that when I see him again I'll get that same smile from a loving man that only saw the best in others. It is an honor to have known him and his wonderful family.

Condolence: I met Harry in 2001. Before I was hired by KLJC, I had the wonderful privilege of being introduced to him. Harry was introduced to me as "the father of KLJC." We had a wonderful chat about the Lord Jesus, Calvary Bible College, and Christian radio. Harry had a passion for people, a passion for radio, and a great love for KLJC. It was indeed his baby. In the years to follow, whenever I had a question or issue in radio, I knew Harry would be there--and would know the answer. He knew all about the history of the station and the students who were there over the years. He was a true confidant and friend. He had a passion to honor the past, but also to recognize the need to prepare for the future. It was Harry's passion for students that helped me press on with the vision of creating the student station at KLJC and continue his legacy of training students for broadcasting and ministry. Anyone that has been associated with the broadcasting department at Calvary Bible College was given that great privilege because of the foundation that was laid by Harry Waterhouse. His memory and legacy live on through the countless students who have impacted this world and spread the Knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Condolence: I have great, blessed memories of my mentor and friend H.S.(Harry) Waterhouse. Harry taught me good radio technique and patiently molded me into the "radio man" I eventually became. Harry believed fervently that we should be "Communicating for the Coming King, and he was a great communicator of that truth.

After Steve Francis graduated from CBC, I was selected by Harry to be the basketball play by play announcer of the Calvary Warriors team. Harry was the color commentator. When the game would get exciting and I became a partisan instead of an objective reporter, Harry would give a grin and a look that communicated what I needed to hear without saying a word.

Harry always told me he regretted not having more technical knowledge and training, which motivated me in future radio ministries to learn all I could technically and be willing to learn by doing. My mind today goes to the KLJC "staff meetings" that would be held at the Waterhouse domicile on Sunday evenings after Church. Some how I ended up playing Scrabble with NJ (Mrs Waterhouse) on one such night. We had some great matches and I still laugh when I think of one word she used to win the match after telling me I could not tell anyone she used that word!

Harry invested his life into so many of us who went on to full time ministry in Christian radio. Men like Justin(Rusty)Dix, John Maher, Barry Potter and Dan Webster and many others come to mind. Harry famously gave a final test which required writing in a blue book what I would do when I was named Manager of a new Christian radio station somewhere in the world. We all wrote feverishly in our blue books and were instructed to pick up an envelope from the desk that had our name inscribed. When the envelope was opened, we were admonished that good radio people do not let others know what is actually going on in the studio, especially when things were rapidly falling apart. so the note inside told us not to react, but the test we had just taken had no impact on our final grade (which he had already figured) but would have a great impact on our future ministry. I used the things Harry taught me in that class when I put KFSI in Rochester MN on the air several years later. I also borrowed that technique from Harry when years later I taught that same class to my students at CBC. Some of my former students still remind me of that final test and laugh with me about it now.

I will readily admit I was devastated when Harry announced in the CBC Chapel that he was resigning from CBC and KLJC at the end of the semester. I went into the library and found my Pastor's wife (Janet Dix) and had a good cry over Calvary's loss of Harry Waterhouse. I am thankful for Harry's ministry and investment in my life and ministry. I know at times I frustrated him, yet he still loved me and prayed for God's best for me. Harry would be taking his RED editors pencil to this recollection to shorten it, I'm sure!

Today I bless Harry's memory and thank God for making me a student of Mr Waterhouse. Thank you Harry for modeling a Godly Radio Man for me. And thank you for teaching us all to advance the Knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ!

Condolence: I have known Harry Waterhouse just a short while. Harry Waterhouse was a friend on Facebook and a member of my Facebook pages dedicated to the servicemen based at Dunkeswell in Devon,England with the US Navy Fleet Air Wing 7 in WW2.
