Obituary for DeLois Lundquist Watkins (Hammontree)

DeLois Lundquist Watkins, 91, of Independence, MO, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, March 28, 2021. A visitation will be held from 6-8pm on Thursday, April 1, 2021 at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E 39th St, Independence, MO 64055. Service will be at 10am on Friday, April 2, 2021 at Coventry Estates Baptist Church, 17133 East 39th St S, Independence, MO 64055, followed by burial at Mound Grove Cemetery, also in Independence, MO. DeLois was born on November 15, 1929 in Kansas City, MO to John Walton and Amy Thelma (Combs) Hammontree. She was one of two children. DeLois graduated from William Chrisman High School in 1947, before attending UMKC for a year. She later returned to finish her bachelor’s degree in elementary education with a certificate in Library Science, finally graduating in 1970. DeLois married Richard “Swede” Lundquist on February 20, 1953 and the two were married just short of 51-years, when he passed away in 2004. DeLois and Richard had three children. In October of 2008, DeLois was blessed with love a second time, when she met and married William “Bill” Watkins, also gaining a stepson and stepdaughter. Once she graduated, DeLois worked as the Librarian at Burke Elementary School for 13 years. She also worked part-time as a clerk typist for the Missouri State Highway Department for 8 years. DeLois was a member of the Coventry Estates Baptist Church, National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution, Colonial Dames of the XVII Century, and Mary Paxton Study Class. She was a lovely, kind woman, inside and out. DeLois loved reading, traveling, roses, The Andy Griffith Show, being a grandmother, and socializing at church and with family and friends. DeLois never missed her weekly hair appointments; always maintaining her style and class. DeLois is survived by her loving husband, Bill Watkins; children, Sandra Eldridge (Jim Callaway), Mike Lundquist (Kathy), and Beverly Miller; stepchildren, Robert Watkins and Nancy Watkins Gossett; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
