Obituary for James Nelson "Jay" Haefele

JAMES “JAY” NELSON HAEFELE
James "Jay" Nelson Haefele, 92, died at his home in Merriam, KS with his loving family at his side. Jay was born January 9,1929 in Topeka, KS. After high school, Jay joined the Air Force where he spent the next five years attaining the rank of Technical Sargeant, the next highest enlisted grade at the time. His career years were spent at Panhandle Eastern Pipeline as a computer analyst/programmer. During retirement Jay loved golf, bridge and billiards. He was a very loving, kind person to all his family and friends. He had a soft spot for all pets, especially his own Bailey and Lucy. He is survived by his wife, Faye; children, James (Susan) Haefele, Mary Heininger, LouAnn (Curt) Longanecker, and Ann (Doug) Smith; step-children, Sondra (Randy) Jordan, Cyndi (Raymond) Rexroad, and Julie Laughery; a sister, Mary Dunham; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 6 step grandchildren; 12 step great- grandchildren; and 2 step great-great grandchildren. Jay is preceded in death by his first wife, Marcia; either siblings; daughter, Carolyn Karnes; and step-son, Don Laughery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Olive's Hope Pet Rescue in Pleasanton, KS (started by his daughter, Carolyn) and the local ASPCA.
